A mature and cold fantasy setting with death lurking around every corner, and a protagonist who wants to be “the Hero that saves the day with no casualties”? That isn’t going to work. So why is this important? Because the world and the mc’s personality don’t match. Well, not “everyone” as in “even enemies”, but “everyone” as in “everyone who isn’t an enemy”. ![]() While at the beginning rather self-centered, he grows to become more and more “stereotypically heroic” – i.e. The mc is someone who starts his journey in this world with an exceptionally good hand, as is typical for isekai protagonists. Fairly standard stuff for a more “mature” fantasy setting. This story mostly takes place in a fantasy world where a moment of carelessness or plain bad luck can mean death. The problem is essentially that it doesn’t feel like the story doesn’t has any real stakes, but this needs some context because I’ve read quite a few stories “without real stakes” that were enjoyable. This story has a few key problems that stop it from being one of the stories I look forward to being updated. For the sake of not being too long, I’ll only focus on the problems I have with the story. ![]() Note: I’ve read up to chapter 85, beware very mild spoilers. We always wanted an older actress, but I think the only conversation we had is I wondered whether Young Sadie should be there at all, if he should only dance with Old Sadie, but then I thought, “No, you need that magic.” I will also say that I thought the chemistry between Sarah Gadon and James Franco was so unmistakable that I wanted to see them dance together one last time.
